Sodium: may range from 1 to 4 grams/day depending on the patient's blood pressure control and the amount of edema. Severe sodium restriction of less than 2 grams/ day is rarely indicated except for patients with chronic heart failure. Sodium restriction is usually between 2-4 grams/ day.
Tips for managing sodium intake:
Know how much sodium intake that you are allowed each day.
Keep an accurate food diary.
Read food labels...look at amount of sodium per serving. Look for hidden sodium like: MSG (monosodium glutamate), sodium benzoate, disodium phosphate, sodium sulfite, sodium nitrate and baking soda.
Limit the amount of processed and canned foods in the diet.
Watch your beverage intake...some beverages have added sodium.
Try to substitute herbs and spices and squeeze fresh lime or lemon to add flavoring to food.
Report changes in weight or swelling to your physician.
Be cautious when eating out...request condiments, gravies and dressings to be on the side.
Limit the amount of convenience food because it is very high in sodium.
